The Uganda Cranes, the national football team of Uganda, has announced the appointment of Paul Put, a Belgian football coach, as their new head coach. Put has signed a two-year contract and his immediate responsibility is to lead the team in the upcoming 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against Guinea and Somalia this month.
The official announcement took place at the headquarters of the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) in Mengo. Moses Magogo, the president of FUFA, expressed his confidence in the selection process and stated that they received over 150 applications for the coaching position, including two from Ugandans. After careful consideration, the FUFA Executive Committee chose Paul Put as their preferred candidate and fully supports him.
Magogo praised Put's coaching experience and capabilities, emphasizing his suitability to effectively guide the national team.
In addition, Magogo revealed that Put will have the authority to select his own backroom staff. Put is bringing along five individuals from Belgium, but there will also be Ugandans included as part of the coaching team.
