LycaMobile Uganda: Rumors of Closure and Service Outages Spark Concern

LycaMobile Uganda, a subsidiary of the UK-based Lycamobile Group, has recently faced allegations of shutting down its operations in the country due to declining sales. However, the company has not officially addressed these rumors.

LycaMobile entered the Ugandan market in January 2020 and launched commercial services in April of the same year, gaining recognition for offering affordable data bundles.

Despite its competitive offerings, LycaMobile has experienced significant service outages, leading to speculation about its potential closure. Numerous customers reported issues with their data bundles over the weekend, further fueling rumors of the company's demise.

One notable aspect is that LycaMobile Uganda's social media pages have been inactive for the past two years. Upon investigation, a pinned post from 2021 was found on the company's pages, explaining that the National Telecommunication Operators in Uganda had received a directive from the Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) to suspend access to social media platforms and online messaging applications. This directive was unrelated to the closure of LycaMobile Uganda.

To address these concerns, a website reached out to LycaMobile privately to inquire about the company's status in Uganda. In response, the company stated, "Our company does not have any plans to leave Uganda at the moment. We are committed to serving our customers in Uganda and providing the best possible service."

The Uganda Communication Commission (UCC), the industry regulator responsible for overseeing the telecom sector, has not issued any warnings regarding LycaMobile's potential closure. UCC is obligated to inform the public and industry stakeholders about any imminent closures in the telecommunications space.

As of now, UCC has not commented on the alleged challenges faced by LycaMobile Uganda, further adding to the uncertainty surrounding the situation.
