Nyombi Thembo Named UCC's New Executive Director

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has recently appointed Mr. George William Nyombi Thembo as its new executive director after a four-year vacancy in the position. Mr. Nyombi, a former State Minister for Information Communication and Technology, will replace Ms. Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo, who has been serving as the acting executive director. The appointment of Mr. Nyombi comes with a five-year term, renewable once.

Ms. Kaggwa, who held the position in an acting capacity, expressed her gratitude upon the confirmation of the new appointment. She will now focus on her role as the director for Engineering and Communication Infrastructure at UCC.

Mr. Nyombi brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously worked as a senior planning and development officer at the Uganda Communications Universal Services Access Fund (UCUSAF), formerly known as the Rural Communications Development Fund (RCDF).

The selection process for the executive director position began in September when UCC advertised the vacancy. The aim was to identify a leader capable of strategic planning, policy formulation, and program execution in line with the mandates outlined in the Uganda Communications Act of 2013. The appointment of the executive director is made by the Minister of ICT, as UCC is an autonomous entity under the ICT ministry.

Ms. Kaggwa has received praise from industry players for her contributions to enhancing ICT security, combating fraudulent domains, promoting e-services, endorsing local content on mainstream media, and mediating corporate disputes within the sector.

The new executive director will be responsible for managing an industry that plays a crucial role in Uganda's digital transformation through internet connectivity. The position requires strong leadership skills to navigate the evolving landscape of communication technologies and ensure that UCC's strategic goals align with the broader national agenda of digital transformation.
