Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has criticized the United States and the United Kingdom embassies for issuing travel advisories to their citizens, warning against visiting Uganda due to terrorism concerns. In response, Museveni stated that it should be the government's responsibility, not outsiders, to issue such advisories.
Museveni's comments came in the context of the recently concluded Nyege Nyege festival in Jinja district. He expressed his disapproval of the American and British advisories, referring to them as the actions of "mistake makers." Museveni asserted that if the situation in Uganda were truly dire, it would be the government's duty to advise against travel to the country. He further criticized these advisories as interference in Uganda's internal affairs by foreign entities.
The president went on to suggest that Western actors bear responsibility for terrorism in Africa and other parts of the world. He claimed that the chaos in Libya and the Sahel region, including countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad, was caused by some of these actors. Museveni also pointed out the UN's involvement in the long-standing issue of terrorism in eastern Congo, which he attributed to undemocratic structures within the organization, namely the Security Council. He expressed his astonishment at the UN's apparent indifference to the suffering of Congolese and Ugandans in that region.
Despite his criticism of foreign advisories, Museveni commended Uganda's security forces for their successful efforts in ensuring the safe conclusion of the Nyege Nyege festival. He acknowledged that there were credible reports of attempted infiltration by external elements during the event.
In conclusion, President Museveni voiced his dissatisfaction with the American and British embassies for issuing travel advisories about Uganda and admonished them for interfering in the country's internal affairs. He also attributed terrorism in Africa and other regions to Western actors and praised Uganda's security forces for their effective protection of the Nyege Nyege festival.
