In a grand ceremony that combined Anglican traditions, ancient cultural rituals, and regal splendor, Jovia Mutesi has officially taken her place in royalty by marrying King Kyabazinga William Gabula Nadiope IV. The momentous event, which marked the fifth queen of Busoga, took place at Christ's Cathedral in Jinja City on November 18, 2023.
In a historic move, the 35-year-old King Gabula Nadiope IV became the first king to be married at the iconic headquarters of Busoga Diocesan, Christ's Church Cathedral, located in Bugembe Township. The wedding coincided with the 49th birthday of Jovia Mutesi's father, Stanley Bayoole.
The ceremony began at approximately 1:43 pm, with the couple exchanging vows in front of a global audience. Ten minutes later, they exchanged rings as a symbol of their eternal commitment. The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, officiated the ceremony, emphasizing the significance of marriage between one man and one woman, drawing from the biblical Genesis.
Over 2,000 guests, including Vice President Jessica Alupo, politicians, public figures, and royalty from Uganda and beyond, gathered under large tents for the outdoor service. A choir of 100 members provided a captivating blend of modern and cultural liturgical music.
The wedding was broadcast on Uganda's major television networks, attracting more than 10 million viewers. Along the procession routes from Kamuli and Mayuge Districts, crowds lined up to cheer the royal couple. Stringent security measures were implemented, both on the Nile waters and on land, to ensure the safety of the ceremony.
Kyabazinga Nadiope IV, born on November 1, 1988, is the son of Uganda's first Vice President, Wilson Gabula Nadiope II, and Josephine Nadiope. Jovia Mutesi, the first-born daughter of a Resident District Commissioner, joins a lineage of queens, succeeding four others since 1939.
The royal wedding in Busoga is a rare occurrence and evokes the historical precedent set in February 1956 when Henry Wako Muloki married Alice Kintu Muloki. Following the ceremony, the royal couple proceeded to the reception at the Igenge Palace, accompanied by enthusiastic crowds eager to witness this momentous occasion.
