Ghana striker, 28, dies after on-pitch collapse

Tragic Death of Ghanaian Striker Raphael Dwamena at Age 28

Raphael Dwamena, a prominent striker from Ghana, has passed away at the age of 28 after collapsing on the field during a league match in Albania. The incident occurred while Dwamena was playing for Egnatia against Partizani on Saturday. Despite the immediate intervention of specialized medical professionals, he unfortunately did not survive, as confirmed by the Albanian Football Federation (AFL).

Dwamena had been the leading goal scorer in the Albanian league this season, having scored nine goals. He had also earned nine caps and netted two goals for his national team. Following the tragic event, the match was abandoned, and the federation subsequently postponed all games scheduled in Albania for the week.

The AFL expressed its deepest condolences to the Dwamena family and the Egnatia club, acknowledging the profound impact of this loss on the entire Albanian football community.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) also conveyed its deepest sympathies to Dwamena's family during this challenging time. GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku stated in a press release, "He served his country well and consistently displayed class whenever he represented Ghana."

In 2017, Dwamena's proposed £14 million move to Brighton fell through after he failed a medical examination. However, he went on to play for Levante in La Liga and also had a loan spell at Real Zaragoza. In 2021, he collapsed during a cup match in Austria between his team Blau-Weiss Linz and Hartberg. Fortunately, he recovered from that incident and continued his professional career. It was reported that he had previously undergone a heart operation and had an automatic defibrillator implanted.

Levante expressed their condolences, stating on social media, "Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during these difficult moments. His legacy in our club will endure forever." Real Zaragoza also paid tribute, saying, "We are devastated by the sad news of the passing of our former player Raphael Dwamena. You will always be remembered by Zaragoza's fans. Rest in peace."

The football world mourns the loss of Raphael Dwamena, a talented player whose memory will be cherished by fans and teammates alike.
