Former ICT state minister, George William Nyombi Thembo, has been selected as the new executive director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). The appointment was made by Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, and Thembo will serve in this role for the next five years. UCC is responsible for regulating Uganda's communications sector, which includes telecommunications and broadcasting.
Prior to his appointment, Thembo was serving as the head of the Uganda Communications Universal Service Access Fund (UCUSAF), formerly known as the Rural Communication Development Fund. He takes over from Eng. Irene Kaggwa, who had been serving as the acting executive director since assuming the position from Godfrey Mutabazi four years ago.
Thembo, a former Member of Parliament representing Kassanda South in Mubende district, expressed his key priority in an exclusive interview with New Vision. He emphasized the importance of building upon the achievements of the past two decades and developing a strategic plan to ensure inclusiveness. His vision is to provide connectivity to every citizen in Uganda, leaving no one behind in the realm of ICT. Thembo also highlighted the need for relevant content, with a focus on promoting locally produced content for television platforms. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of telecom companies fulfilling their licensing obligations.
This appointment is expected to bring new leadership and direction to the Uganda Communications Commission as it continues to regulate and advance the communications sector in the country.
