Mr. Sharif Higenyi, a gateman and gardener at the residence of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party President, Mr. Robert Kyagulanyi, was among the 1,862 students who graduated from Kampala International University (KIU) on November 25. The institution's 28th graduation ceremony took place at the university's main campus in Kampala.
Mr. Higenyi, who graduated with a Diploma in Public Administration, expressed his gratitude to his boss, Mr. Kyagulanyi, for inspiring and sponsoring his education. He had worked as a gateman and gardener for Mr. Kyagulanyi for five years. Mr. Higenyi acknowledged Mr. Kyagulanyi's educational background and achievements, and he was motivated to further his own education with his boss's support. He had previously obtained a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education and requested his boss to support his academic journey, which Mr. Kyagulanyi wholeheartedly welcomed.
With his newly acquired diploma, Mr. Higenyi looks forward to continuing his academic journey by pursuing a bachelor's degree and later postgraduate studies. Despite his academic achievements, he remains committed to his responsibilities as a gateman and gardener at Mr. Kyagulanyi's residence.
During the graduation ceremony, Mr. Kyagulanyi congratulated Mr. Higenyi for his determination and resilience in balancing his academic pursuits with his work responsibilities. He described Mr. Higenyi as a friend and work partner. Mr. Kyagulanyi also highlighted the significance of Mr. Higenyi's academic achievement, stating that it serves as an inspiration to other Ugandans striving for self-development in challenging circumstances.
The 28th graduation at KIU saw a total of 1,862 graduates, with 53.5 percent being females and 46.6 percent males. Science-related programs accounted for 50.9 percent of the graduands, while non-science-related programs constituted 49.1 percent. Additionally, 224 students graduated with higher degrees, including PhD programs, Master's programs, and Postgraduate Diploma programs.
During the ceremony, 17 students graduated with First Class degrees, and they were awarded fully sponsored scholarships by the university to pursue their desired Master's programs.
Professor Muhammad Mpezamihigo, the Vice Chancellor of KIU, called on the government to reinstate the higher education loan scheme to provide financial support for academically capable students who face financial challenges in accessing higher education.
The Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovations, Dr. Monica Musenero, who officiated the ceremony as the Chief Guest, promised to discuss the reinstatement of the loan scheme with the relevant authorities. She urged the graduates to demonstrate hard work and integrity as key principles for success in the workforce.
Overall, Mr. Higenyi's graduation from KIU serves as a testament to the importance of education and the support of employers in empowering individuals to pursue their academic aspirations.
