During the four-day Nyege Nyege festival in Jinja district, a total of 20 cases of phone theft and one case of car theft were reported to the Jinja police station, according to the police. Police spokesperson Mr. Fred Enanga addressed journalists on Monday and disclosed that 45 suspects involved in various crimes were arrested.
Out of the arrested individuals, 10 were issued police bonds, while arrangements were being made to arraign the remaining 35 suspects in court. The crimes reported included theft of mobile phones (20 cases), impersonation of security and organizers (3 cases), minor fire outbreaks (5 cases), possession of marijuana (3 cases), motor vehicle theft (1 case), and possession of forged tickets (12 cases).
Despite terror alerts issued by the United Kingdom and United States missions in Kampala, warning their citizens about attending public gatherings like the Nyege Nyege festival and visiting national parks, Mr. Enanga stated that the event concluded peacefully. He highlighted that there were no specific threats or intelligence linked to the festival, and although fans remained vigilant, there were only a few incidents reported to the police.
Mr. Enanga mentioned that over 300 soldiers from the Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF) and the police were deployed to ensure the safety of attendees and their property.
The Nyege Nyege festival, which took place from November 9 to November 12, was held in four venues: the Source of the Nile, Nile Park, Jinja Golf Ground, and Jinja Agricultural Showground in Jinja district.
