Custom instructions — a method of giving users greater control over how ChatGPT responds — are now available to all users, even those on the free tier of the service, according to OpenAI. The functionality, which was first made available in July as a beta for ChatGPT Plus customers, allows users to specify the preferences and needs they want the AI chatbot to take into account while responding.
Users can save time by not having to rewrite the same instruction prompts every time they engage with the chatbot.
For example, you could instruct ChatGPT to limit its responses to a certain number of characters or to change the tone of its responses.
With the feature's July introduction, OpenAI also demonstrated how a teacher using ChatGPT to develop a lesson plan would no longer have to repeatedly reiterate that they teach third grade in order to receive an adequately personalized response.
Meanwhile, developers who use the capability can instruct the chatbot to respond in languages they favor — or exclude ones they don't.
"Through discussions with users in 22 countries, we've deepened our understanding of the critical role steerability plays in enabling our models to effectively reflect the diverse contexts and unique needs of each person," the business previously stated.
However, until last week, bespoke instructions were only available to individuals who paid $20 per month for a ChatGPT Plus subscription. The option will now be available to both free and Plus users, as well as on iOS and Android. Furthermore, custom instructions can now be utilized even when chat history is disabled, according to OpenAI.
To utilize custom instructions, first click on your name, then select "Custom instructions" to begin.
According to the firm, the feature will soon be available throughout the EU and the United Kingdom.
