The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has called upon all vendors and dealers of edible insects to acquire certification to guarantee the safety of their products for public consumption. Sylvia Kirabo, the Principal Public Relations Officer at UNBS, highlighted the importance of this requirement, stating that it aligns with the bureau's mandate to establish, promote, and enforce standards that safeguard public health, safety, and the environment by preventing the circulation of dangerous and sub-standard goods.
UNBS recognizes the growing popularity and consumption of edible insects in Uganda and acknowledges the potential risks associated with the industry. By urging dealers to obtain certification, the bureau aims to ensure that the insects sold as food meet the necessary quality and safety standards.
Certification serves as a means to verify that edible insects are produced, harvested, processed, and packaged under controlled conditions that minimize the risk of contamination or other hazards. It involves a comprehensive evaluation of various factors such as hygiene practices, storage facilities, handling procedures, and adherence to relevant regulations.
Through this initiative, UNBS aims to protect consumers from potential health risks while also fostering consumer confidence in the edible insect market. By enforcing certification requirements, the bureau aims to create a transparent and accountable system that promotes the production and sale of safe and high-quality edible insects.
The UNBS encourages all dealers in the edible insect sector to proactively engage with the certification process. By doing so, they not only comply with regulatory requirements but also demonstrate their commitment to providing safe and reliable products to consumers.
In addition to ensuring product safety, certification can also provide numerous benefits to dealers. It can enhance their reputation, differentiate them from unregulated competitors, and open doors to new market opportunities, both domestically and internationally.
The UNBS remains committed to supporting the growth and development of the edible insect industry in Uganda while upholding the highest standards of safety and quality. Through collaboration with relevant stakeholders and continuous monitoring, the bureau aims to create an enabling environment that safeguards public health and promotes sustainable practices within the sector.
By obtaining certification, dealers of edible insects can play a crucial role in building a robust and responsible industry that contributes to food security, economic growth, and the well-being of consumers in Uganda.
