This Christmas, the Premier League will see two historical firsts: Sam Allison, the first black official to officiate a match in fifteen years, and Rebecca Welch, the first woman referee in league history.

Both officials will officiate premier league games this month, according to a statement from PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited).

The match between Fulham and Burnley on Saturday, December 23, will be officiated by Welch.

On Boxing Day, Allison will supervise Sheffield United vs. Luton Town. Allison is the first black referee in the Premier League since Uriah Rennie, who officiated in the league for 11 years until 2008.

These two will officiate their fifth Premier League match of the season, after the PGMOL's Select Group 2 referees that officiated the following four:

On Boxing Day, the 42-year-old former firefighter will officiate Sheffield United vs. Luton as PGMOL chief Howard Webb keeps his promise to diversify top flight officiating from earlier in the summer.

Who is Rebecca welch? 
Rebecca Welch is a football referee from England. She was nominated to referee a League Two match between Harrogate Town and Port Vale in 2021, making her the first woman to be appointed to officiate an English Football League match. She was born in Washington, Tyne and Wear.
