Police in Nakapiripirit district successfully intercepted and halted a child trafficking operation, resulting in the rescue of ten underage individuals who were being transported to Kenya. The juveniles had been gathered from various villages in Napak district and were being transported via motorcycles to Namalu when law enforcement apprehended the suspects involved.
The police have identified and arrested four individuals in connection with the incident. The suspects have been named as Angela Regina (19 years old), Joyce Korobe (20 years old), Logit Gildo Korobe (27 years old), who worked as a boda boda rider, and Leone Aleper (23 years old).
Karamoja Police spokesperson, Mike Longole, expressed his appreciation for the vigilance and swift reporting demonstrated by the public, which played a crucial role in facilitating the arrest of the suspects. He further stated that ongoing investigations and eyewitness testimonies have provided additional evidence linking the suspects to the crime. Following the completion of the inquiry, the suspects will face legal proceedings in court, according to Longole's statement to the Nile Post.
As part of the operation, the police seized two motorcycles that were used by the traffickers.
According to data from the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, it has been revealed that over 90% of street children in Kampala originate from Napak district.
