Nabbanja Commences Distribution of Iron Sheets to Karamoja Region

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has officially launched the distribution of iron sheets to the Karamoja Sub-region in Uganda. This initiative comes in response to a directive from President Museveni following a scandal involving the diversion of these items meant for vulnerable individuals in the sub-region. The flagging off ceremony took place at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) stores in Namanve industrial area.

During the ceremony, Ms. Nabbanja emphasized the importance of following guidelines in the distribution process. District security committees have been instructed to use predefined lists in the presence of district local government officials, Members of Parliament, elders, and beneficiaries. The aim is to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution process.

The distribution plan specifies that Moroto will receive 9,568 iron sheets, Napak 12,350, Nakapiripirit 6,526, Nabilatuk 6,188, and Amudat 9,620. Additionally, Abim, Kitodo, Kaabong, and Karenga will receive 17,316, 18,798, and 6,500 iron sheets, respectively. Each beneficiary is expected to receive 26 iron sheets, with repainted sheets being provided to reformed warriors.

To monitor the progress, chief administrative officers are required to submit returns to the Office of the Prime Minister within one month from the date of delivery. State Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Agnes Nandutu, commended the Prime Minister for her efforts in ensuring the delivery of the iron sheets to the region.

Mr. Remigio Achia, the chairperson of the Karamoja Parliamentary Group, expressed relief as leaders, as they will now be able to fulfill the presidential promise and alleviate pressure from former warriors.

The distribution of iron sheets was previously halted due to a scandal involving the diversion of these materials. Currently, three ministers are facing charges in the Anti-Corruption Court for their alleged involvement in the diversion.
