In a tragic incident on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, five cows owned by retired cleric Rev. Moses Wanyibe from Khaukha village, Wanale Sub County in Mbale district, were struck and killed by lightning. The unfortunate event occurred during a heavy downpour, accompanied by thunder and lightning.
According to an eyewitness, the cows were grazing in the farm when the rain started. Seeking shelter from the inclement weather, they gathered under a tree, which proved to be fatal as they were all struck by lightning and died instantly.
Rev. Wanyibe, who was present at his home during the incident, described it as a devastating loss. The force of the lightning was so powerful that he himself lost consciousness and fell off his chair when it struck. Upon regaining consciousness, he peered through a window and was met with the heartbreaking sight of his lifeless cows lying beneath the tree.
This unfortunate incident marks the second lightning strike within a week in the district. On November 14, 2023, another tragic incident occurred in Buwasu village, where a 12-year-old boy named Shibuta was fatally struck by lightning while seeking shelter at a neighbor's house.
