110,579 students sit for UACE exams today

A total of 110,569 students have commenced their final Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) exams today on Monday, November 13, at various centers across the country. The exams will continue until December 1.

According to Jennifer Kalule Musamba, the spokesperson for the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), the candidates began with History for arts students and Mathematics for science candidates. Out of the total number of candidates, 43% (47,227) are females, while 57% (63,142) are males. At the UNEB center at Upper Prison School Luzira, there are 34 candidates, four of whom are females and 30 are males. The exams are being conducted at a total of 2,103 examination centers. Among the candidates, there are 243 special needs candidates, out of which only 70 require support personnel. The remaining candidates will be given an additional 45 minutes to complete their exams.

Musamba stated that UNEB has successfully delivered all the examination scripts to the respective stations across the country, where the heads of centers collected them for distribution to the candidates.

However, Musamba also issued a stern warning against exam malpractice to the candidates, teachers, headteachers, and all those involved. UNEB has deployed a significant number of covert and overt scouts and security personnel to closely monitor the conduct of the examination. She emphasized that UACE candidates are considered adults and can be tried in courts of law if found guilty of malpractice.

Musamba highlighted that anyone found engaging in exam malpractice will face the consequences outlined in Section 25 (1) (2) and (4) of the UNEB Act 2021. This includes a maximum sentence of ten years' imprisonment upon conviction or a fine ranging between shs20 million and shs40 million.

Overall, the UACE exams have commenced smoothly, with UNEB taking strict measures to ensure the integrity of the examination process.
